"My family says they miss me even when I'm home."
This comment from a client was impactful. Here was someone crushing every goal, showing up for their team, looking perfectly put-together from the outside — but internally running on fumes.
In our recent Energy of Leadership session, we asked participants to rate themselves on a burnout scale of 0-10. The responses? Mostly 3s, 5s, and 7s. The telling part wasn't the numbers... it was the collective "yes, guilty" when we talked about the subtle signs of high-functioning burnout.
High-functioning burnout doesn't always look like what you'd expect. You're not collapsed on the couch... you're still performing, still showing up, still getting results. But underneath, something fundamental has shifted:
Your systems are breaking down in small ways:
Your team dynamics are shifting:
You're saying yes because no feels too hard. When you don't have energy to set boundaries, everything becomes "fine, give it to me" — even when you have no idea how you'll get it done.
Here's what most people don't realize: when you're operating from depletion, your energy contracts. And that contracted energy communicates.
You become a repellent to the very people who need to connect with you most. Teams hesitate to bring you feedback. Partners wait for "the right time" that never comes. Clients sense something is off even if they can't name it.
The ripple effects compound...
The solution isn't doing more or pushing harder — it's showing up differently with what's already on your plate. Because here's the truth: these challenges aren't going away. Workforces are getting smaller, demands are increasing, and there's always another mountain to climb.
The question is: will you build sustainable systems now, or wait for life to hit the pause button for you?
After 23 years of working with high-performing leaders, I can tell you this: every single one has experienced some version of what we're discussing here. This isn't about perfection or never feeling tired — it's about awareness and choice.
When you lead from presence rather than depletion, you don't just feel better - you become more effective. Your team performs better. Your impact multiplies.
The point isn't to create great impact while being fried and having nothing left at the end of the day. The point is to create even greater impact while still having plenty of yourself left over for the people you love and for your own life.
