Your Physical Vitality: A Leadership Superpower

Written by Anese Cavanaugh | July 2, 2025

There’s a common belief in leadership:
That wellness is something you tend to after the real work is done.
That it’s a luxury, a reward, or another item on a list of “shoulds” — sleep more, drink more water, fit in a workout.

But what if physical vitality isn’t something you squeeze in, but something you build from?

In our latest Energy of Leadership — Live! session, we flipped the script on traditional wellness advice and explored physical vitality as an essential leadership foundation — one that directly influences your presence, patience, and performance.

Vitality as a Way of Being

“Creating physical vitality is a way of being, not just a doing.” — Anese Cavanaugh

When we treat wellness like a fragmented checklist, it becomes another management task. But when we integrate it into how we lead — through intentional choices, boundaries, recovery rhythms, and aligned presence — vitality becomes infrastructure. It strengthens the way we show up for others and ourselves.

This is where we started shifting the lens: from external inputs to internal alignment.

What This Looks Like in Real Life

During the session, participants reflected on how low energy shows up — and how deeply it affects their leadership. Words like “tense,” “withdrawn,” “drained,” and “overwhelmed” weren’t just describing a personal state — they were describing the ripple effect on teams, clients, and families.

Then came the breakthroughs:

“If I shifted my perspective on my self-care, I wouldn’t see doing things for others as a chore, but an opportunity.”

“I deleted Instagram in January and never looked back — I didn’t realize how much it added to my stress.”

“When I have access to my physical energy, I stop worrying about it. That alone frees up space mentally and emotionally.”

These weren’t just “aha moments.” They were entry points into redefining leadership itself — not as something fueled by grind or depletion, but by alignment and vitality.

The Real Shift

Vitality isn’t a reward for surviving the week. It’s a signal of how you’re leading — and a resource you can build, protect, and intentionally design.

So if you’re ready to shift the narrative from “wellness as a side task” to “vitality as leadership fuel,” here are three questions to start with:

  • What does physical vitality feel like for you, when it’s working?
  • What consistently drains that energy in your leadership rhythms?
  • What would shift if you protected that state of being as part of your leadership strategy — not something outside of it?
